RWBY Trailers: A Runthrough

Hello everyone! Mashy here.

So before I kick off the liveblog of RWBY Episode 2, I was suggested to rewatch and give you my opinions on the first four trailers. I have seen them before, so this part is still not actually live. It’s more like a trailer review! With screenshots.

Ah well. But at any rate, here we go:

Oh! It’s Little Red Riding Hood.

It’s a really gorgeous first impression, by the way. All props to the animators of this series – they pulled out all the stops for this.

The music right after this reminds me of Dark Pit’s theme from Kid Icarus: Uprising.

A cross? Interesting. I noticed that her silhouette at the end had crosses on it too. Could it be symbolism, or just a character detail?

*dramatic pose* is the camera getting this

I heard someone say once that the trailers were made more to show off¬†the weapons more than the girls themselves, and that does seem accurate – though you can see little hints here and there that Ruby isn’t exactly stone cold. A couple times she has a smile on her face.

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 5.28.26 PM
Look at that gore, oh noooooo

It’s animated so fast I barely have time to react ūüėĄ Not that that’s a bad thing.

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 5.28.34 PM
Ah, this pose is much better!

There’s Ruby done! I love the detail of the bullet casings.

Moving onwards to Weiss, whose trailer was my favorite last time, I believe.

“I AM JUDGING YOU”

I notice she has a scar here, and the fight we just witnessed must be how she got it! (I had to watch the whole thing and then go back and continue this post because these trailers move so darn fast.)

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 6.04.44 PM

Unnecessary yet totally awesome shadow effect here.

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 6.05.07 PM
I would conjure giant snowflakes just to sled all over the place.

Hmm, well, magic-saber-wielding, piano music-ing, ice-skating, knight-fighting graceful lady is still in the running for my favorite. Plus, Weiss is incredibly reminiscent of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Which is also awesome.

Weird but neat technomagic saber thing.

Yep, that must be how her scar was made. I like that this cut is big, but the end result doesn’t go all the way down her face. Some scars do heal at least a little.

And there’s Weiss’ trailer! Now, do I like Ruby’s or hers better? Er…I knew what my answer was last time, but tough choice. I’ll give you the final rankings at the end.

For now, onto: Blake!

Oh hey, I actually got the sidebar to go away again in this picture.

STORY TIME WITH MASHY: When I was a kid I was very determined that every original character I made was one hundred percent original, no overlapping allowed. Had too similar a name to something that already existed? Not allowed, change it! I remember taking two characters and being insistent that their exact names would NEVER pop up when I googled them. Anyways, I had an OC who I wanted to look unique too, and since she had the combination of extremely pale skin, black hair, and goldish eyes, I was always on the lookout for a character described too similarly in a book or something like that. But no, for years my character was successfully unmatched in appearance.

…And now Blake comes along. Goshdangit.

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 6.22.32 PM
Monsters to knights to flat-out robots? All right then…

I see you there, with your purple-not-black magic and purpley color scheme. This is RWBY, not RWPY! (I do notice the thing red, white, black and yellow have in common, but I won’t mention it for fear of getting angry comments.)

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 6.23.34 PM
Don’t know who the redhaired man is, hmm…Ooh! Roman Torchwick’s long-lost brother?

Good gosh you two, get your voice acting under control.

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 6.23.36 PM
*music kicks in* oh man you know what’s coming

This reminds me exactly of facing a boss fight at the end of a game. The mooks are defeated, the music swells up, some kind of monstrosity marches forth to kill you…

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 6.25.08 PM

And that there is Blake’s introduction. If there ever was a case of “one of these is not like the others” for trailers, that might be it!

No matter; on to the last video, Yang’s.

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 7.46.42 PM
Hi there, Roman! Nice to see a familiar face.

Never mind, Blake, you’re off the hook in terms of unusual trailers! Seems like each one¬†upped it a bit in terms of modern settings and weapons. Ruby’s was the most vague, featuring nothing but a fairy-tale-esque girl in the middle of the forest,¬†and it escalated from there, straight into…a club. All right then. This one has the most defined plot, too. Made it hard to narrow down the screenshots I took.

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 7.47.59 PM
Welp, we know her personality right off the bat.

Oh my god¬†Junior no – you can’t – you can’t just try and¬†do¬†that, okay?! Did you forget what she just did to you? And that you basically just threatened to kill her? What do you THINK is gonna happen?!

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 7.49.02 PM
Note to self, anyone with a distinct design Should Be Remembered

This is your second general reminder for all characters to please have their voice acting be safely contained and manageable. Not aimed toward anyone in particular, though, of course. What screenshot?

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 7.50.43 PM
Yang used gauntlets before they were c- haha no they were always cool

Interesting; I hadn’t remembered that Yang’s weapon also had magical properties. Or if not Yang’s weapon, Yang herself. That’s three for four, isn’t it? Ruby’s scythe, while the most impressive, didn’t have any shiny glowy qualities to it. So I guess it all balances out.

Screenshot 2016-02-22 at 7.51.08 PM
see the moon symbolism, see it, huh huh huh

And thus we end up with the trailers coming full circle…and the sky has two moons for some reason???

Those trailers are pretty cool! My rankings for favorite are the same as ever; Weiss’ was the best, followed by Ruby’s, Yang’s, and finally Blake’s. Not that Blake’s is the worst trailer ever, but it doesn’t really have the same good balance of plot vs pretty action as the others. Ruby’s and Weiss’ were vague enough so that we were intrigued but didn’t really care about the plot – we were fine with just watching these girls take down monsters with cool weapons set to cool music. Yang’s had plot, but it was extrapolated on a bit better. Blake’s was the most confusing of the bunch.

But that’s all right. I’ll take a break, and then try to get to liveblogging episode 2 tonight! See you then!

RWBY Episode One: A Runthrough

Hello everyone, it’s MissMash with her first real post!

So, to kick off my blind liveblog of RWBY, let’s talk about stuff! Namely: spoilers, which I will¬†not¬†tolerate. I’m pretty good at guessing twists, and if you give me the slightest hint, it makes the whole figuring-stuff-out-as-I-go-along thing a lot less fun. Heck, I count teasing hints like “omg the next episode will blow your mind!” and “don’t worry that character isn’t what you’d expect!” to be serious offenses.

The only things I know about RWBY: Blake is a catgirl(?????), and somebody shoots somebody in the heart. With an arrow. I guess. Those things mean basically nothing to me, so even if they’re MAJOR MAJOR spoilers, don’t panic! I’ve got it all under control!!!

Now, the next hitch to address is the whole blind liveblog thing, which will not apply to the first episode, which I’ve already watched. Therefore, I’ll cover it with a quick runthrough of my opinions on it, and then start the liveblog proper with episode 2. I do not know my schedule for doing episodes, sadly.

Anyways, let’s get this show on the road:

Screenshot 2016-02-21 at 7.44.11 PM
My goal in this is totally to make you click on this to try and unpause it, by the way.

So we start off with foreshadowing/backstory involving dust and Man Vs. the Forces of Evil. I absolutely adore villains that are 100% evil and all-powerful, like made-of-darkness kind of stuff, so this looks promising.

Screenshot 2016-02-21 at 8.05.36 PM
Who needs regular guns when you haaave…That Thing

And then we switch to…a robbing! By someone who I will later find out is named Roman Torchwick, which reminds of those big colorful shooty candles. Roman candles, of course.

Two things about this scene: One, I was braced for the animation to look super SUPER awkward, and I was pleasantly surprised. It’ll be a bit slow from here on out, specifically in parts like the Ruby-shoving-cookies-in-her-mouth scene, but it could have been a LOT worse, and it looks gorgeous for what it is. And I pretty much know the animation will improve over time – as the audience and the plot expand, the budget will too, am I right?

Second, the voice acting. It’s not bad. At ALL. Specifically Roman going all “sh-sh-sh-sh-shhhhhh, calm down,” to the guy he’s robbing, which makes go all flaily for some reason. SO SMOOTH, ROMAN.

Screenshot 2016-02-21 at 8.05.54 PM
Did I mention how adorable Ruby is, by the way? Because OMG.

Ruby ignores the mook because she’s got her headphones in, which is awesome. We’ll get along just fine there, Ruby. I mean, we’d better, since your face is in my current page header.

Screenshot 2016-02-21 at 8.09.48 PM
Fire magic versus storm magic, huh? Interesting.

Pretty decent fight, and This Mysterious Lady comes in to help Ruby fight This Other Mysterious Lady. The magic looks awesome, and Ruby’s GIANT GUN SCYTHE THING is just so awesomely dangerous! I really like unique weapons. This scythe (which I’m pretending I don’t know the name of yet) is a winner.

Screenshot 2016-02-21 at 8.10.43 PM
(shh, no one can see me in THE SHADOWS)

Then we’ve got the interrogation scene. Pretty standard expositiony stuff, but it has some good dialogue here and there. Like Ruby’s reaction to the headmaster asking about her eyes. Note to self, eye color means Something.

Screenshot 2016-02-21 at 8.11.37 PM
Don’t actually answer this, but is one of them adopted because¬†um

The final scene involves Yang Xiao Long, Ruby’s sister, whose name I looked up to make sure I wouldn’t get it wrong. I mostly know their names because I watched all the trailers before starting the series, and because I skimmed the RWBY TV tropes page a while ago – I am a¬†massive¬†troper, by the way. Anyways, I’m not entirely sure about Yang; her, uh, figure is a little awkwardly animated, to start with. But I’m reserving judgement.

The first episode ends with some narmy dialogue, some vomit jokes, and a goshdarn cool theme song thing. Overall, it looks to be a show with real potential! Liveblogging it will be slow going, but I can’t wait!

*insert “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” here, since¬†it had the word moon in it or something*
