And with the four core girls in the shot at the same time for the first time this series, Blake blows out the light on the episode!

That was a very good one. Blake rose in my estimation while Weiss wavered very slightly in mine. Ruby continues to be adorable and relatable, and as for Yang – well, I have the least amount of opinion on her so far. I don’t have much experience with the “flirty and fanservice” archetype because I watch more western animation than anime (who am I kidding, I love Ouran Host Club, you gotta have general knowledge after that).

We also saw more Jaune – by which I mean he got thoroughly humiliated several times – and saw a quick flash of a new girl, who has me quite intrigued…even though she shares similar colors with Ruby, which is not OCD-friendly if you’re gonna make each character represented by colors, yeesh.

…wait, Yang and Jaune are both the yellow ones. Dang!

I’m still praying that the book Blake read was some form of foreshadowing.

Anyways, thanks for tuning in and I’ll see you all next time!

I can’t even make a joke over the perceived animation cuts here because I’m still seething over the fact that I’ve never been able to find a full-length book centered around two souls in one body. I’ve looked.

They animated Blake’s eyes reading the pages!

“It’s a book about a man with two souls…each fighting for control of his own body.”

HOLY CRUD BLAKE, YOU GIVE ME THAT BOOK RIGHT NOW, DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH I LOVE POSSESSIONY STUFF LIKE THAT, WHAT DID I SAY LIKE FOUR SCREENSHOTS AGO,  DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW OBSESSED I WAS WITH YU-GI-OH FOR A WHILE FOR THAT VERY REASON

Hello, headmaster and accompanying vice headmistress lady whose names I hope will be mentioned like fifty more times!

Yang noticed something a bit off about his speech…are we gonna have a possession thing? I love possession things!

I bet Yang had to deal with this when Ruby was five-“don’t worry someday she’ll be mature”

“Dust For Dummies:” please exposition me, brochure.

So I was just kind of giggling and snapping screenshots during this scene, until:

“No.”

Now, if there’s one character archetype I can’t stand, it’s the school bully. Male or female equivalent. You know, the males are stupid, muscly jocks who push you over in the lunchroom, the females travel with their lackeys in tow and take every opportunity to mock something, anything at all, about the protagonists. It’s cringey and petty and mean and the bully will have no personality except to be as cruel as possible every second they’re onscreen.

Currently they’re trying to avert this by giving the bullies (especially the female ones, I think) backstories to explain why they’re such crudfaces, and it usually boils down to a rough home life. That doesn’t change the earlier episodes, though. Take Pacifica from Gravity Falls – I was all for her character development! It went great, I don’t hate her now! But then you rewind to her first appearance, “Double Dipper,” and she’s still being a brat. Heck, her parents aren’t even around, so WHY is she being needlessly rude?

The reason I mention this is because Weiss did something that fell dangerously into the “things female bullies do for no reason but to make others suffer” category: mock the protagonist. If there’s one thing to do to make a character just scream petty rudeness, it’s do an unpleasant imitation of a voice. Especially when Ruby is just trying to be nice.

I know Weiss is in the theme song all buddied-up with everyone, so she’s clearly going to show a kinder side. I just hope it happens soon.
